Blogging: 5 benefits of commenting on blogs

Do you comment on blogs? Here are five great reasons why adding comments is good for your social marketing and online profile.

  1. Creates opportunity – by regularly engaging on blogs you’re building your contacts and this can lead to more connections, guest post opportunites and new business.
  2. Raises your profile – adding interest to someone’s article gets you noticed by other readers and the blog author.
  3. Drives traffic to your own blog – it can drive more visits as other readers, commentators and the blog author will want to learn more about you. They may even leave you a reciprocal comment!
  4. You’ll learn something new – there’s nothing like a good debate and it will enrich your own experience.
  5. Sparks more blogging ideas – reading other blogs is inspiring and the debate may spark an idea to present an alternate view in your own article.

A few of extra tips:

  • Research and comment on blogs that compliment your business and have the same audience as you to really see the benefits.
  • Add a genuine comment. Simply saying ‘great article‘ or ‘really love your post‘ doesn’t offer any value. Say why you loved it, continue the debate by asking a question or putting another point of view across.
  • Get a Gravatar (Gravatar.com) so a picture of you (instead of a grey head outline) will be shown with your comment. It pulls the photo registered to your email, and as if by magic, it will follow you everywhere. This will help build personal relationships and gets you noticed especially if it’s the same photo you use on your social networks.
  • After you’ve added your comment, share on social networks. If you’ve taken the time to include a comment you probably think the blog itself is worth seeing, and what’s more your comment and link will reach even more people.

Now you’ve learned all of this, why not leave a comment in the box below and tell me which tip is your favourite or add your own!

    Hi Alicia,

Thanks for sharing some very useful tips about blogging, here. I also really like the fact that it can really create a support system when we publish on other peoples blogs. There is so much information out there on the web it’s really encouraging to receive a comment that isn’t spam. It makes you realise you are making a worthwhile contribution – which we all need to be reminded of from time to time.

    • 18 October 2011 by Alicia

You make a great point, Felicity. Commenting on other blogs is a great way to build that support network and get your message out to a wider audience. Thanks for your comment!

Our incredibly insightful comment is that after reading such a blog post we felt absolutely compelled to leave a comment so here it is – all bloggers listed on our site probably ought to have such a post on their own blog to encourage more comments

Sounds like a great idea – thanks for leaving your incredibly insightful comment! :)

Alicia, I’m thrilled to have found you! I’m working my way through your blogs. You write simply and clearly which for a bit of a technophobe like me is brilliant. Thank you, I feel much more able and confident about tackling all this social media.
    Rebecca :)

Fantastic! So pleased you’re finding my blog useful. See you in Twitter Brilliance!

Where do I start? I was researching #FF, found your article on it, followed you on twitter and look for it every day. Saw your interview with Brigitte. So here I am back to make myself smarter on twitter. Liked the way you ended this blog. Not only did you give pointers on why respond to the blog but compelled me to practice it too :). I have been writing blogs for a little while now, engaging in the dialog has been very satisfying. Wish it happened more often. Simple to do yet very few employ (includes me). On a mission to change it (one step at a time). Now off to Gravatar.

One of the benefits of blogging for me is that it sharpens my thinking. The more I blog, the more I know what I should blog about. Each post, coupled with comments and interaction with new and old friends alike, have given me the courage to focus on topics I feel most passionate about, which in turn encourage and help others the most. Thanks for hanging in there with your blog and pointing the way.

Alicia, you read my mind! This exact tool popped up on my Hootsuit yesturday and I down loaded it, not 100% sure how I was going to use it but reading this I feel more confident I have done the right thing. Now Im more likely to follow your suggestions and use it. Thank you!

Yay for you, Chloe! It’s a great additional feature as I’ve explained. Hope you enjoy using it as much as I do…

I appreciate your insights and really like the way you provide that gentle hint with a link when you ask for comments. I find a lot of my readers don’t comment. They don’t blog and some don’t even seem to know how. :) I’ve been trying to figure out how to get that engagement.

I do get comments when I participate in a regular meme on Tuesdays because those folks understand the need and try to reciprocate.

Just discovered your blog and in the process of seeing what you’re all about. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I was researching whether it’s still an accepted/useful thing to leave comments on people’s sites. It seems to have gone out of fashion a little and bloggers are more concerned about how often they get shared. Still I shall press forward and see if it makes a difference. Great post anyway, thanks.

    • 10 May 2014 by Alicia

It is still very useful – we love to receive feedback and hear the opinions and thoughts of our readers so that we can continue to share great content. So, YES – please keep on leaving comments, and thanks for stopping by to leave your comment on mine. :)

If you run a small business, chances are you are wondering if blogging is worth the time and effort. The short answer is a resounding YES! Blogging on a frequent basis is a relatively easy, inexpensive way to enhance your inbound marketing efforts, drive traffic to your site, and attract more perspective customers.

    • 13 June 2014 by Alicia

I wholeheartedly agree – thanks for stopping by!

  • 6 July 2014 by Doyle Slayton

I’ve seen a lot of people remove comments from their blog and invite people to comment on the social share for the post… ex. Google Plus or Facebook. What’s your take on that strategy?

    • 29 July 2014 by Alicia

      Hi Doyle

Thanks for your comment. It really depends on what your overall strategy is because there are positives and negatives about this, like any other strategy. :)

By sharing comments on social media you are extending your reach and visibility. By not having comments on the blog they get lost forever in social media long term. That makes it difficult to create a loyal community on your blog/website, and that means the benefits of continued learning and value is lost (for you and your community). Plus, you lose the longterm benefit of social proof that blog comments provide.

I hope that answers your question!

  • 23 August 2014 by Cimt Infotrain

Blogs provide your small business with a chance to share your expertise and knowledge with a larger audience. An opportunity to connect with a wider audience and build a community is a strong benefit for consultants and knowledge workers.

    Thanks Alicia.
That was educative. But how do you know where to draw the line?
Some people leave comments that seem to draw all attention
to themselves or give controversial views that could mislead your
readers. How would you handle that?

  • 19 July 2015 by Rhabbi

Very interesting and educative post, for me, my favourite tip is the one on gravatar

    • 28 July 2015 by Alicia

Cool! I love gravatar – so easy!
