Do I really need a business blog and a newsletter?
posted by Alicia in Social Media & Online Marketing
I’m often asked why it’s important to have a blog and a newsletter.
(by newsletter, I’m talking about regularly emailing subscribers who have opted in to hear from you by email because you send them amazingly, useful and interesting stuff that they LOVE).
So it’s time for an online marketing 101…
Newsletters and blogs are great for
- reaching more prospects and customers
- getting them to like and trust you
- building your profile as an expert
- demonstrating your values and showing some personality
Ultimately they help you connect with your customers, keep your brand or service in the forefront of their minds and drive eyeballs to your website.
So if they do the same thing, why have both?
Blogs are found online. If you’re a business, ideally on your main website.
It gives people a reason to visit. Those who already know you, and those who don’t know you yet.
Unless you have an online shop and regularly update your products, or have a blog, there really isn’t a reason for people to visit your site more than once or twice.
You want visitors to return because it’s rare for people to commit to buying the first time they meet you.
Search engines (e.g. Google) LOVE new words to read on your website. When there’s lots for Google to read, it helps them rank your website better so people find it when they type their search term in the Google box.
That means reaching even more people
But often, people will find your blog article, read it and leave. Then forget that you exist.
We all do it. Even if we’re sure we’ll remember it because it’s SUCH a great blog.
That’s why it’s a good idea to include a newsletter sign up on your website. (Bonus Tip: especially on each of your blog pages) that way you can keep in touch with your visitors.
They don’t need to remember to visit your blog because you’re saving them the trouble by emailing them.
Delivering your greatness directly inside the place that person spends a lot of their time. Their inbox.
What’s more, by using a system like AWeber or MadMimi (affiliate links) you can find out a whole bunch of stuff about your subscribers, but mainly:
- What they like and what they don’t like
- So you can tailor your stuff and keep sending them what they want
- And, because they’re seeing you regularly, they get to know you and hopefully one day will buy from you
The best thing of all is that you can use the blogs you write for your newsletters, so you don’t have to write more stuff!
Here’s a quick recap on how blogs and newsletters fit together:
- people visit your blog to read your great stuff
- while there, they sign up for your newsletter
- then you deliver more great stuff to them by email
- and they remember you, and get to trust you more
- so that one day they become a happy customer and tell their friends about you
I hope that explains why blogs and newsletters are an important part of your marketing but if you want more help – just ask. You know where to find me!
